This private residence occupies the rear half of a lot shared with an Arts & Crafts home built in 1913.
The project answered two challenges: to assimilate a contemporary design into a recognized preservation zone, and to shield the home’s residents from two abutting alleys and a busy nearby carwash. The design both belies the home's modernity and disguises its proximity to the carwash, folding into itself to create a secluded courtyard—an indoor-outdoor living space in keeping with California tradition.
