A bar and grill addition called for a new bar/back bar, storage room, bathroom and kitchen takeout counter. The existing bar and addition are located within a 1930 masonry building with exposed brick walls, painted wood trusses, concrete floor, and structural steel columns and beams from seismic retrofitting. In line with these elements, the new design employs materials such as finish-grade plywood with exposed fasteners for the walls, a plate-steel bar countertop and steel angles for footrests. The storage, bathroom and kitchen takeout counter are held below the existing truss height, revealing old along with the new. New plywood walls contain flip-down doors, backlit using resin panels and LED lighting, which become shelving for drinks.
